How an Independent Phoenix Rapper Plays New York for the First Time – AntTheVillain Blog

On October 21, 2026 I played my first show on a New York stage. I'm Chicago-born and Phoenix-based, and before that night I had played eighteen shows, every one of them on the West Coast or in Arizona. If you're an independent artist who has never played New York, here is what I did to get ready and what I would do again. **Look for a room built for independent artists.** I played the Mo Dubb Stage at Daze Summit Festival, Fall Edition, at District 385 in Ridgewood, Queens. Daze Summit was created to connect independent artists with the industry, which is a different thing from walking into a room full of people who never heard of you. When you can't tour to a city, look for the events already built around artists like you, then book through the official page the event lists. **Get there before the show and treat the trip like content.** I flew out of Phoenix at dawn and filmed the whole way in: the flight, the New York skyline from the air, Midtown, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty. None of that was planned as a big production. I just kept the camera on, because a first New York show only happens once. **Film one shot that shows who you are.** The day of the show I filmed a single continuous take walking through Brooklyn, no cuts, with my own song playing over it. You can watch the full one shot at [antthevillain.com](https://www.antthevillain.com). One long take is easy to plan, hard to fake, and people watch it to the end. **Capture the stage the same night.** Get your own footage and audio of the set, not just what the venue shoots. I posted a freestyle clip from the trip within days. It passed a thousand views on YouTube in its first day. Short, honest clips travel further than polished announcements. **Send everyone to something you own.** Every post I made pointed back to [antthevillain.com](https://www.antthevillain.com). Social apps decide who sees your work. Your own site is where you keep the people who do. **Know that one show is a start, not a finish.** Playing New York did not turn into a fanbase overnight, and I'm not going to pretend it did. What it gave me is real footage, real proof I can put in front of the next promoter, and a city that now knows the name. The work is what you do with it afterward.
